Go to: Welcome from Ellen Johnson, President of American Atheists
Welcome and thank you for visiting this site! Veterans Day, 2005, promises to be a historic and memorable event as we honor our “Atheists in Foxholes” at the National Mall in Washington D.C.
Patriot American Atheists, Agnostics, Humanists, Secularlists, Rationalists,
and others who do not believe in the existence of a supreme being have
served proudly in uniform as long as there has military service. The tradition
continues today, in all branches of the service in locations throughout the
world. And yet, the old statement “there are no Atheists in Foxholes” continues
to be quoted and believed, in spite of clear evidence to the contrary. This
is a metaphorical “slap in the face” to all service members who serve
honorably and bravely without reliance on a supreme being or the expectation of
supernatural aid.
American Atheists is giving us the opportunity to be both seen and heard on a national scale and I strongly encourage our non-religious service members, veterans, and their supporters to participate fully in this event. This event is not about current or future conflicts - it is an event to acknowledge the contributions and sacrifices of our non-religious service members and their right to claim their acknowledged place in the history and defense of this country.
Join American Atheists on Veteran’s Day for this historic event. And if you cannot be at the event because of military service, you can still participate through your individual sponsorship of this website. I also encourage you to contact the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers through our website at www.maaf.info for inclusion on our list of “Foxhole Atheists”. If you are active duty and plan to participate, feel free to email me at milatheist@aol.com for guidance concerning how military regulations apply to participating in events of this type.
Again, thank you for your support and interest!
